Show Notes Transcript

In this episode, Jared shares why it's impossible for musicians to do every single thing necessary to advance their music careers.

What's up gigging pros. It's Jared. And it is a beautiful day outside, it's November, it's 51 degrees. I'm going on one of my podcast walks, ready to drop some insights and knowledge into your music career. So today's concept I want to chat about is called the who, not the house. So let me give you some context about this. My goal is to make a living performing. And you know, I'm very much accomplishing that goal. But I know that not not everybody is. And the problem there is that people who are pursuing this goal heavily, they may not know the strategy of what you need to do in order to accomplish that goal might just be a mystery to many people. And that's kind of the mystery that we try to reveal here on this podcast. And in my free book, Gigging Secrets. And in Book ive Academy, which I'm probably oing to share some more details n soon. It's a training program or musicians trying to make a iving from their music. So the trategy is kind of the uestion, I don't know what to o. But when you start to learn hat strategy, by consuming this odcast and the Gigging Secrets ook, you start to realize that ou have to do so many different hings that are not even erforming in order to get to our stage and make that living erforming. So it's a lot of ifferent things. And it's a lot f things that are not related o music, things that we are not xperts at things that I am not n expert at. Like, for example, ou have to have a website, it as to be a good one that is ctually designed and optimized or bookings, which there's a raining on in BookLive Academy o how to do. But you also have t do other things that you're n t experts that, and a big e ample for me is social media, I will be the first to admit t at I absolutely suck at social m dia is not my forte. I'm an i trovert by nature, which means t at, you know, it, just the t ought of posting something on m Instagram account, brings up s me fear inside me, like I'm, I g ess I am afraid of people j dging me. And I'm also worried t at I'm bothering people. And a so I don't know what to write, o what to post. And those t ings get in my way, because it p events me from being an expert i social media. And quite f ankly, I shouldn't have to be a expert in social media. The p oblem there, though, is that i you're not an expert in these t ings, or you don't have s mebody on your team doing t ese things, then you're not g ing to accomplish your goal in t e first place. So it's a real c tch 22 there. But this was w ere I was introduced to the c ncept of the who, not the how, b one of the people I learned m rketing from Russell Brunson. I ve mentioned him on this p dcast a couple times. And the w ole concept here is that if y u're not an expert at s mething, or you have something t at's preventing you from being a expert at something, instead o asking the question, how do I d this? That's the wrong q estion to ask, the actual c rrect question to ask is, who d I know? Or who can I find t at is already an expert at t is, that I can get to a complish this for me. And then y u plug that person in, instead o learning the knowledge, or a tempting to learn the k owledge yourself. So it's a c mplete mindset shift. Because I think in music, school and m sic lessons, we're always t ught that we have to be the o es to do the work, we have to b the ones to practice and l arn your scales and learn all o these excerpts in repertoire. A d nobody else is going to l arn them for you. Because when i comes to audition time, n body else can take your a dition for you. But the crazy p rt is that that's the only s tuation where that's true. L ke, nobody knows if somebody e se designed your website for y u. And quite frankly, people e pect other people to design y ur website for you. That's why w b design agencies exist. And s milarly for social media m nagement. Like I mentioned, t at's my biggest area of s ckiness. And I suck at social m dia, which means I wasn't g ing to be the best person to d my social media. So as a r sult, recently, I hired a s cial media manager. And they h ve taken over all of my social a counts for me. And the crazy p rt is like, you know, I just h red them about two weeks ago. A d the increase in follower c unt is just insane. Like, I h nestly didn't even know what t expect going in, but they are k lling it beyond my wildest d eams. And it's not because I a ked the question, How can I b come an expert at social media a d increase my follower count? I asked the question, Who do I know or who can I hire? That can increase my social media follower count? For me? And so think about that, think about your music career, what are all the things that you have to do maybe if you've read the Gigging Secrets book, which is free by the way, go to Gigging ecrets.com. And grab your free opy. Think about all those hings that it shares with you ow to do. And instead of trying o do all of them yourself, ecause it is a lot of work, I'm ot gonna lie, ask the question ho can do those things? For ou? For example, one of the ecrets is your booking ptimized website. Instead of sking, How can I become a ebsite expert, and learn how to rite the correct sales copy on y page, and put the right calls o action on it? Instead of sking, How do I do those hings? Ask who do I know who is n expert at web design. And by he way, at BookLive, we do h ve expert web designers who y u can hire to do this for you. J st shoot me an email Jared@Book ive.com, if you're inter sted in that, but start to think about all of those things. And i you don't know where to find hese people, the I'll give you a hint, the internet is an amazi g place to find all these kinds of people. And there are two m in sites where you can hire reelancers to accomplish all t ese different pieces like graph c design copywriting, which is not, you know, it's not like he legal copyright 2021. That' actually how to write words that convince people to hire ou as a musician. That's what opy is a little side tange t there. So two, two main sites that I've used very succe sfully. One is fiverr.com, Fi ve rr.com. And by the way, I make o money referring these place, I just give them to you becau e I really want to help music ans make a living. It's just uch a shame that they don't teach this stuff in music schoo. So I'm NOT an affiliate for e ther of these two sites. fiver.com. That is good for findi g small project freel ncers. Like, say you have one s ng that you want mastered or so ething like that. fiver.com is a good place to find hat. And the second one is Upwor.com. And Upwork is a good place to find kind of more long term reelancers. So say you want omebody to hire on for a month or two, or to hire your socia media management out Upwor is a good place to do that. So I hope this helps. I hope his helps you think diffe ently about how you're tryin to accomplish your goals and p rsue your music dreams. So remem er guys, first, if you don't know the strategy behind, build ng a career off of perfo ming live events, then get your ree copy of Gigging Secre s, the book at GiggingSecret.com You just pay some shippi g and handling, and it'll arrive at your doorstep.
